When he’s not in the spotlight conducting the Andy Long Orchestra, Andy holds down the position of Assistant Leader of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra as well as Artistic Director of the New World Ensemble.
As a soloist he has given over 400 recitals including tours as far afield as Norway, the Czech Republic and Poland where he gave a live television performance of Elgar’s violin sonata. Andy is a keen exponent of contemporary music and has commissioned, performed and recorded many new works including the first violin concerto of Geoffrey Kimpton. He has also recently recorded several works with the New World Ensemble string quartet.
In spite of his busy performing schedule he has managed to develop a distinguished teaching career – for twelve years on the staff of Chetham’s School in Manchester, privately for Sir Yehudi Menuhin and also at Manchester University. He is in demand as an orchestra coach for colleges and youth orchestras and has given many master classes.
Once affectionately described by Martin Milner as “my musical grandson” his engaging personality, easy manner and extraordinary musicianship has made him a firm favourite with audiences of all ages and across all musical genres.
He continues to find fresh inspiration from his magnificent 1695 Grancino violin which was once owned by the eminent violinist Albert Sammons.
